FSSAI is the government body which looks after the things related to food safety in India. When it comes to food safety, mostly all the things are in the control of the FSSAI in India. The law which helps in maintaining food safety and hygiene in the Indian food market is known as FSS or Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. This law is strictly implemented by the FSSAI, a body which has been established by the same mentioned law. There are many types of food business on which FSSAI is applicable, out of which one is Food retailers. In order to run a food business as a retailer one thing which is mandatory is FSSAI License Registration. The FSSAI process for retailers is as similar as it is for other food products. The current blog will discuss the FSSAI process for retailers in detail. Hence one must read this blog till the end. 

Who are Food Retailers? 

In the food retail business products have been purchased from the manufacturer or distributor or wholesaler and directly sold to the users. These businesses include the local shops, confectioneries, etc. In simple words we can say that, food businesses which deal directly with the customers, that means the businesses whose transaction is B to C are known as food retailers. B to C transactions means transaction of business Owner to the customer directly. These businesses also fall under the ambit of the FSSAI. It is the duty of FSSAI to keep eye on the food retailers and from time to time checking whether they are following the rules and regulations given under the FSS Act of 2006 regarding the food safety and hygiene. 

What is FSSAI Licensing and its types? 

After submitting the required documentation and data to the FSSAI, proprietors of food businesses are authorized to operate in the Indian market with an FSSAI license. This license has been granted under the FSS Act of 2006. It is mandatory for all individuals running food enterprises in the market to obtain an FSSAI license registration. The purpose of this license is to ensure food safety. One needs to obtain this food license because operating a food business without an FSSAI license could result in severe fines and penalties. FSSAI process for retailers  or FSSAI Licensing is of three types which are mentioned below: 

  • Basic FSSAI License for which one needs to apply through Form A.  It is mainly for the small businesses with an annual turnover below Rs. 12 lakhs.  Basically it is suitable for petty food manufacturers and small-scale industries.
  • State FSSAI License for which one needs to apply through Form B. It is for those businesses whose annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 20 crores. It is applicable to medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, marketers, and distributors.
  • Central FSSAI License for which one needs to apply through Form C. It is for large businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crores. It is applicable to manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, marketers, and distributors operating at a national level.

What is the FSSAI Process for Retailers?

In order to complete the FSSAI process for retailers license, one needs to follow the steps given below: 

Pre Requirements for FSSAI Process for Retailers

  • Check if your retail food business is eligible for the Basic FSSAI License or State Food License or Central FSSAI License and accordingly apply for the same.  
  • Gather necessary documents, including identity proof, address proof, passport-size photographs, and any other specific documents required by the FSSAI.
  • Obtain the application form as per the license which is applicable on your business. Like Form A for the Basic FSSAI License, Form B for the State FSSAI License and Form C for the Central FSSAI License 

FSSAI Procedure for Retailers 

  • Provide correct information about your retail business on the application form.
  • Send the completed application form to the state or local FSSAI office with the necessary paperwork.
  • The FSSAI officials will review your application and documents.
  • They may conduct an inspection of your retail premises.
  • The FSSAI will process your application, and if everything is in order, they will issue the License.
  • You will receive the FSSAI License for your retail food business upon approval of your application.

Post Requirements for FSSAI Process for Retailers

  • Display the FSSAI License at a prominent place within your retail establishment. This is a legal requirement.
  • Keep track of the license expiry date and initiate the renewal process before the license expires to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Adhere to the food safety and hygiene standards prescribed by FSSAI to maintain compliance.
